Newark, Alameda County
Newark incorporated in 1955 and is surrounded on its land sides by Fremont, which formed around it a few months later. Salt has been harvested from evaporation ponds along its bayshore since the 1860s, and pale mountains of it still rise beside the Cargill plant. The town grew up in the 1870s around the shops of a narrow-gauge railroad that ran from the bay to Santa Cruz.
